So 3D Dot Game Heroes came out this week for the Sony PS3, and I bought it. It’s okay for a Zelda clone, but I can safely say that it is a Zelda rip-off (or “tribute” whatever you want to call it) and that’s the only reason I like it. I’m not a huge fan of the graphical style, nor have I found anything terribly unique about the game, and the story is just there. It’s mostly a parody of retro games (Zelda in particular) but the writing isn’t funny enough to work for me. Maybe I’ll change my mind when I finish the game, but so far I’d give it a solid rent if you own a Playstation 3. Which is another thing; why isn’t this on the Wii? It would be easier to forgive the striking similarities to Zelda if this were a multi-platform title, but it’s a PS3 exclusive. I haven’t seen anything in the visuals (aside from 720p resolution of course) that couldn’t be replicated on the Wii, although I’m no game creator.
But to take this one step further, the game’s publisher Atlus has released a commercial on GameTrailers that is completely a spoof of the original NES Zelda “rap” commercial. There’s no way it could be confused for anything else. Watch the video after the break and tell us what you think.
For reference, here’s the original Zelda commercial:
So what do you think? Harmless parody or shameless rip-off?
